Camellia, iris and cherry blossom are three flowers that appear in
Japanese art in very different ways. The camellia blooms in winter and
represents pride as well as understated beauty; in manga and anime, its falling
petals are also used as a metaphor for sensuality. The iris stands for
elegance, trust and loyalty, and features in samurai texts as a symbol of
faithfulness and resilience. Cherry blossom is probably the best known of the
