As the name suggests, a ball helps distribute the ink. It is integrated into the tip of the pen and rolls the oil-based ink paste from the lead onto the paper. Thanks to the thick paste, the ballpoint pen releases less ink than other writing instruments and is therefore more economical. What's more, the ink only dries after many years, making the ballpoint pen a reliable companion for a long time to come.

The picture shows a close-up of a biro tip with an elegant, metallic-red casing. The precisely manufactured tip ensures an even writing pattern and a pleasant writing experience.

The Hungarian László József Bíró developed the ballpoint pen together with his brother in Budapest back in 1938. After 18 years of development, the invention was ready to be patented. However, the ballpoint pen only made a real breakthrough when Henry George Martin used it for the crew of the Royal Air Force. At high altitudes, other writing instruments had the problem of overpressure in the cartridge, causing them to leak. The ballpoint pen, on the other hand, was safe with its viscous ink paste.

What was once a revolutionary writing instrument has now lost some of its innovative image. Nowadays, ballpoint pens - also known as ballpoint pens - are handed out as promotional gifts on every corner.

Originally developed for use in space, space pens such as the Tombow AirPress Pen are also a real problem solver in many other situations. The name for ballpoint pens with gas pressure refills, also known as compressed air refills, is derived from their original purpose. A ballpoint pen was needed that could write reliably even in zero gravity. Thanks to the special gas pressure refill, space pens allow you to write in extreme situations. When you press the push button on the AirPress pen, part of the ink is released so that you can write upside down for longer than with a conventional ballpoint pen. In addition, it can withstand temperatures as low as -5°C without the typical breathing in of the ballpoint tip. In wet or dusty environments, it outperforms a normal ballpoint refill as the ball needs less resistance to rotate and therefore release the ink.

But be careful: a ballpoint pen with a gas refill is not for nervous fingers! If you press the button too often without writing, too much ink will collect and the pen may leak.

Versatile everyday companion–
The multicolor ballpoint pen

If you find it difficult to choose a refill colour, you can find the right pen for you with a multi-coloured biros. This allows you to write with a single pen and add coloured notes.
